Passion, adventure, espionage and amazing makeup…welcome aboard Pan Am.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love the TV series Pan Am. I’ve been lucky enough to get a little sneak peek at the show and can’t wait for it to hit Australia screens (rumoured to be coming soon on Channel 9).

Passion, adventure and espionage… They do it all—and they do it at 30,000 feet. The style of the 1960s, the energy and excitement of the Jet Age and a drama full of sexy entanglements deliciously mesh in a thrilling and highly original new series.

In their individual quests for adventure, the Pan Am crew face both opportunity and peril, as they juggle their lives, their loves, their hopes and dreams while flying around the world to glamorous international cities like Paris, Berlin, Jakarta and Monte Carlo. Welcome aboard, and fasten your seat belts… Adventure awaits!

Stars include Christina Ricci, Mike Vogel, Twilight star Ashley Greene and the stunning Aussie Margot Robbie.

Sure the storyline is engaging and Captain Dean is nice to look at, but what really gets me coming back for more is the fashion and makeup! Every woman is polished with gorgeous hair and PERFECT makeup! Back in the 60’s it seems that grooming was one of the highest priorities in a woman’s life and rarely would they been seen without a full face, set hair and immaculately dressed.

All of the girls in Pan Am are beautiful but I am particular enamoured with Aussie sweetheart Margot Robbie who play’s Laura, the newest member of the Pan Am crew.

I was so fascinated with the shows makeup that I decided to contact the shows makeup artist.

Margot Robbie as 'Laura' on Pan Am

Makeup extraordinaire Patricia Regan has worked on many great TV shows and movies (check out her filmography here) and is head of makeup for Pan Am. I was luckily enough to chat with Patricia recently about the show, her inspiration for the show and her step by step guide to recreate the Pan Am looks.

How would you describe the Pan Am look?

Remarkable to the end of time.

What would we find in Laura’s (Margot Robbie’s) makeup bag?

A bottle of Armani’s lasting silk foundation, Mac fleur power blush, Three Custom cool sky eye shadow, Mac rapidblack penultimate eye liner, Shiseido black mascara and EOS honeysuckle lip balm. There was also a grooming handbook put out by Pan Am that we use for reference.

Where did you get your inspiration for the beautiful looks on the show?

In addition to the grooming handbook, I look to fashion photos from the era, documentaries, and have also met actual former Pan Am stewardesses who are still as beautiful today.

What tips could you give to Lipstick and Cake readers who want to re-create the Pan Am looks?

  1. Apply a matte finish foundation such as Make Up For Ever HD foundation, LaMer treatment powder foundation, Armani skin fabric, MAC careblend powder foundation.
  2. Brush and groom eye brows to define natural fuller shape, fill in and extend a touch with a matching brow shade such as Three Custom Color brow shades, Revlon colorstay eyebrow pencils or Chantecaille brow definer.
  3. Apply eye shadow in pale blue, soft green, lavender/violet on eyelid ( such as Three Custom Color pale sky blue, pale lavender, pale green).
  4. Draw a line along upper lashes with either black or brown eyeliner ( Mac gel liner in blacktrack or dipdown are my favorite… liner will stay on without ever smudging ! )
  5. Apply mascara ( Dior Iconic or L’Oreal volumenous ) for extra drama try a couple of Ardell short flares on outer corners!
  6. Blush on the apple of cheeks ( Three custom color cream to powder in rose, pink or red are favorites, for touch ups MAC fleur power or peaches )
  7. EOS ‘egg shaped’ lip balm

The looks of Pan Am

Tomorrow I am doing a one-on-one makeup course at the Napoleon Perdis Makeup Academy where I plan to learn everything I can about applying makeup, enhancing features and create a few signature looks. One of my first ‘missions’ I’ll be setting myself after my course is to recreate the Pan Am look and share it with you. Watch this space…

Huge thanks to Patricia Regan for taking the time out of her busy schedule to chat with us and to the team at ABC (USA) for arranging the interview.

Now tell me my lovely reader, has a TV show or movie inspired your beauty looks?
