An Interview with the Queen of Frocks, Leona Edmiston (and your chance to win a $100 Leona Edmiston voucher).

July 6, 2012

From about 10 onwards, I was determined to be a journalist. My idol was Lois Lane, played by Teri Hatcher, from The Adventures of Superman (I even had a Lois Lane haircut and was certain I was going to marry Dean Cain, after I had divorced Terrence from A Country Practice) and whilst other little girls my age were listening to Hanson and staring at posters of Leo Dicaprio I was working on the Villa Maria School Newspaper. I couldn’t wait to grow up and be a journo, specialising in hard-hitting interviews with inspirational people.

Sixteen years later and although I didn’t follow my original journalism career path, I am back into writing and get a real kick out of interviewing inspirational people (oh and I still think Dean Cain is gorgeous).

As Lipstick & Cake nears its first birthday you may begin to notice some small changes to the site.  As well as recipes, beauty product news and reviews, I’m going to be covering some travel writing, dabbling in a bit of lifestyle news and I will be sharing more and more interviews with you.

Look, I love an inspirational quote as much as the next person but what really floats my boat and gets my drive going is reading about people who have done great things in their life. Through an interview we can learn about a person’s background, how they got started, what inspires them every day, their hopes, dreams and aspirations and most importantly we gain understanding of who they are and why they are that way.

Who better to kick off my new Interview section with than one of Australia’s most successful and influential business women, Leona Edmiston.

Leona, labelled by many as the Frock Queen, launched her solo label with her partner Jeremy Ducker in 2001 and created her very own niche in the market with the dress.  ‘The label, entitled Leona Edmiston, is a tribute to the dress in all its incarnations. A Leona Edmiston Frock is elegant, versatile and ageless.  The label celebrates the confident, urban woman. It exudes classic femininity, effortless style and chic, sexy sophistication’.

I had a chat with Leona about inspirations, favourite beauty buys and what’s new for the brand in 2012.

How would you describe the Leona Edmiston brand in three words? Sophisticated, Stylish, Sexy

What do you love most about your job? Finding fabulous prints from all over the world. It is such a thrill when you find something so beautiful and unique. Some of the prints I use are dated back to the early 19th Century.

What keeps you inspired in life? Travel and meeting new people – especially women that know and love the brand.

Who is your style inspiration? I have a few. Jane Birkin Audrey Hepburn, Daphne  Guinness, Romy Schneider.

What is your number one style tip for women? Confidence is the best accessory – but great heels and bags never go unnoticed!

In your mind, what is the biggest faux par committed by women these days? Following the trends… It is so sad when you see girls/ladies following the current “it look” and you see them tugging on their outfit the whole night! My advice is to find what works for you and your body and stick to it!

You’re an extremely successful business women, what advice do you have for people who dream about starting their own business one day? Know who your customer is and cater for them.

Name 2 beauty products you just can’t live without. Sunscreen by Shiseado – Anessa, Lip Gloss – M-A-C in lust

Do you have a  favourite restaurant and dish at the moment? My favourite restaurant at the moment would have to be Pier. Such delicious seafood! Although, I have yet to visit Chiswick and hear it’s likely to become one of my regular haunts.

What’s new for Leona Edmiston in 2012? There is always a new exciting venture happening!

I adore Ms Edmiston and all her work! She is as fabulous as her frocks, and I really enjoyed the interview.

I did actually post a comment in the weekend, but it appears to have disappeared :( I shall try again!

I’m drawn to the Mitzi bird print frock. The neckline is oh so flattering, and I like the swishiness of the skirt. And the print is to die for.

My favourite Ruby dress is the Rose Dress with it’s flattering cut and oh so pretty print.

I’m a big fan of Leona Edmiston. Huge! I’m waiting until the weather warms up and I’m going to do another #LeonaWeek on my blog, where I wear Leona Edmiston for a week. Much easier in the summer where the pretty frocks are shown off to their full advantage! :)

Great interview Steph! I love Leona and her brand and style. Her dresses never date and I still wear ones I bought years ago and they look like new.

Got to love a LBD and I love the Saskia and the Alice dresses.

LipstickandCake July 9, 2012 at 5:07 pm

Thanks Christina! I’m finding it so hard to choose my favourite…

After much poring over, I must confess
The frock I love most is the Rosie dress
With it’s simple yet breath-taking beautiful design
I’d be so happy if this were mine!
I’d dress it up for any social occasion
I really wouldn’t need any persuasion!
A timeless piece I’d wear with pride
From the stunning Leona Edmiston, known worldwide!

Maryanne - Domestic Divinity July 11, 2012 at 11:14 am

I am currently obsessed with the Dakota Dress.
Everything about it is perfect, from the fabric to the on trend peplum! The perfect dress to go from work to a funky bar. Hooray!!

Thanks for a great give away!

(PS – I like you & Leona on Facey under Domestic Divinity)

Yesterday I found out I’m having a little girl so as soon as I saw “Little Leona” I had a swoon. Love the “Shannon Shift dress”.

Catherine Bouris July 12, 2012 at 9:57 pm

Choosing just one favourite is so hard! I love the Lola D727 dress – it makes me picture a beautiful evening garden party under the stars, a perfect Spring scene. The Toni 976GP dress also transports, but for obvious reasons, transports to another galaxy. It would be too tempting to never wear the dress and simply get lost in it instead.

Jacquii - Couture Caddy July 12, 2012 at 10:11 pm

Drew and Hilary are my absolute favs, styles that I need, styles that I crave. Leona is the queen of making that timeless and elegant dress, the one that you just must posess. What a great interview Steph and competition too, so for this amazing opportunity I’d just like to say thank you!

xx

I adore HEATHER: the colour, folds and drapability of the material all work together to create a work of art.

I am going to a formal wedding at the end of August and could see myself wearing HEATHER: her demureness, modesty and put-on-and-forget comfort are so me.

I have liked this site and Leona on Facebook and I thank Leona for her insight into women who want to look good and feel good without having to worry about little things that can go wrong with their wardrobe.

Joni July 13, 2012 at 12:26 am

I love Marian, I have been looking for a dress exactly like this for a L O N G time!

Theresa Carter July 13, 2012 at 5:51 am

I love the hero maxi dress, the print and the colours are flattering to the style of dress.

Anna July 13, 2012 at 2:40 pm

I love the Hero maxi dress too! the print is really unique and it falls so beatuifully.

Jodi Bussell July 13, 2012 at 8:51 pm

I love the Lavendar dress, timeless class and sophistication. Beautifully elegant with a touch of old world charm.

Wendy July 14, 2012 at 12:28 am

Love the Hero maxi, perfect addition to my wardrobe with it’s gorgeous vintage print!

Virginia Smith July 15, 2012 at 9:39 am

I love the long black party frocks. Perfect. Classy. Slimming. Stunning.

Sharon July 15, 2012 at 5:55 pm

Drew dress, as it’s very elegant, flattering and beautiful. It’s timeless and would be gorgeous to wear. It has a superb slimming effect too.

Bindi July 15, 2012 at 8:47 pm

The Taylor dress is one of my favourites. I love that it can be worn to work with leggings or I can dress it up for a night out. Hides all my wobbly bits too!

Nicola Pengilly July 15, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Oh my goodness – they are all gorgeous – although I particularly like the Hilary – the fabric and style is wonderful. And the Venus…a classic LBD as only Leona could do it!

Kim Miller July 16, 2012 at 1:17 am

I must confess,
I’m obsessed with the Vivien Dress
Its so chic and timeless.

jessica ashbrooke July 16, 2012 at 2:26 pm

I love the valentine dress its something i’d wear alot. have liked both pages on facebook. jessiejones50@hotmail.com

KAREN J WILSON July 16, 2012 at 8:51 pm

Makes a lady look real spunky at any age. Thankyou.

Caroline Fletcher July 17, 2012 at 4:01 pm

I love the Adriana dress – classic style in a daring print. You could tone it down with a dark jacket or go all out by teaming it with some equally daring shoes.

Angie July 17, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Great interview – thanks for sharing with us and thank you for the great giveaway! Leona is an inspiration to me as a woman and as someone starting up a business myself :)

It is certainly hard to pick one favourite! The Lillie is a fantastic LBD, the Violet is cute and has a vintage, yet modern feel to it, and the Hero is a great maxi dress and mixes two of my favourites – exotic and vintage! But I’d have to say the Saffron is my absolute favourite at the moment – I could see myself wearing it to a friend’s house for a barbeque or afternoon tea, then changing into heels and grabbing a clutch for a night on the town. Super cute!

Rachael Campbell July 18, 2012 at 12:19 am

It was incredibly difficult to choose between the Issey and the Lavender, but I think I have to go with the latter overall. Such a great vintage style and definitely a stunningly unique piece you just won’t find anywhere else. The collar and the sleeves are perfection.

Barbara Beriman July 18, 2012 at 11:06 pm

Valentine Dress 1493EW I absolutely adore as it is perfect for covering my big pregnant belly without me feeling overbearingly huge and I can still feel like a lady.

Sallyanne Holland July 19, 2012 at 9:17 am

I have been a Leona fan or EVA… and am now in love w ith the new Ruby Odelia…. I love how all the styles really flatter every woman’s body!!

CHERYL MOULTON July 19, 2012 at 11:59 am

My choice was between the *Rae* and the *Hero* Rae is a simple black long dress with delightful shoulder caps and Hero has the bold colours to welcome in the Spring.

Vicki E July 19, 2012 at 5:02 pm

The Valentine Dress is just divine, just what I need to vamp up my getting a little too casual Gold Coast attire!

Debbie Olliver July 19, 2012 at 9:18 pm

I love the Rose Dress, it is so pretty and would look fabulous on me!

Jacky July 19, 2012 at 10:20 pm

I am a fan of Leona, I’m quite petite but find many of her dresses still fit and flatter me.

My favourite on her website is the Lillie Spot dress, such a pretty, soft, flattering neckline and a great – fairly unusual colour.

I wore a purple Leona dress to a wedding last month and it turned out that the colour scheme was purple so I matched beautifully. Now I’ve got an invite to the wedding of the brother of last month’s bride – time for a new dress!

I do get the leclub newsletter and also the texts.

Melinda July 19, 2012 at 10:29 pm

Just like the Bag and lady of the same name, the Kelly dress is my favorite. Simple, elegant, timeless and affordable. This dress takes us to the time of Frank Sinatra, Elvis and Judy Garland. Just like Leona, true Legends!

Karlene July 19, 2012 at 10:51 pm

I LOVE Leona…I bought four Leona Edmiston dresses from Myer Carindale last month (photos available on request!)
I love the slinky fabrics, the slimming black, the blast of colour, the slimming ties at the waist, the cap sleeves, the knee length drop.
I don’t yet have the Lavinia Dress that I’ve seen online – love it!

Carol July 20, 2012 at 12:22 am

I have a few dresses by Leona from Myer, I love them!

The gold details on the sleeves of the Rae Dress are gorgeous! I’ve always been afraid of being too short and lumpy for a maxi dress though so if I had to choose I’d go for the Lola! Beautiful print!

Rosslyn Tadd July 20, 2012 at 6:07 am

The ‘Adriana Dress’ if I had to choose. A gorgeous blend of femininity, innocence and style. I adore the colour and flow.

Cherie July 20, 2012 at 7:37 am

I love the Hero dress – it has a real Goddess look about it :)

J Walton July 20, 2012 at 9:52 am

The Lilli Spot dress in that glorious shade of green. I love it and want to wear it today.

Rachael July 20, 2012 at 12:30 pm

I love (and really want (need)) the Odelia dress

Dianne Childs July 20, 2012 at 1:04 pm

I love the vintage-inspired red, white and black Violet Dress. It’s a gorgeous butterfly print and the lace detail at the neck adds to the femininity!
