Happy Birthday Maybellline New York!

The makeup giant is celebrating their 100th birthday. ‘Since the brands inception in 1915, Maybelline has continued to invent, reinvent and champion every woman’s right to proudly express her own unique beauty, her way!’

Maybelline is one of my all-time favourite beauty brands and apparently yours too. Every second of every day, someone where is buying and applying one of the brands gorgeous products.

I’m celebrating Maybelline’s birthday with a bottle of the brands prosecco and a chat with Maybelline’s Makeup Director, Nigel Stanislaus.

Nigel & Ruby

You’ve been with Maybelline since 2009. How did you come to partner with the brand?

Wow, has it been that long?

I was contacted by Maybelline, along with several other makeup artists, to see if I was interested in working with the brand. There was a series of interviews and opportunities to showcase my work. This was carried out over several months and to cut a long story short, I was successful and have loved being Mr MNY since 2009!

What do you love most about the brand?

Maybelline as a brand is always evolving. There is never a stagnant moment and there is so much poured back into research and development. Just when you think you know Maybelline, she will surprise you again! I love that the brand has a confidence and NY style that can appeal to every girl at any stage.

And what do you love most about your job?

I love that I get to meet different people every day, and more often than not, I can play a part in building their confidence by playing up their natural features and providing makeup tips. I also love that I get to play and experiment with some of the best products in the world!

Proudest moment to date?

There have been several proud moments since working with Maybelline NY! From judging Australia’s Next Top Model to working backstage at NYFW and then directing key shows here at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. I love collaborating and bringing to life great makeup looks that are achievable for everyone. There’s been so many great opportunities, I can’t decide which is the coolest! You tell me?!

Maybelline is celebrating their 100 year anniversary. In your opinion, what makes the brand so successful?

The amount of research and development that is poured back into the brand is second to none. For example, in testing a mascara, the team would test everything from the marriage of a brush with a formula, to then comparing the result on different women to ensure the result is consistent. To date, more than 44 thousand sets of women’s lashes across all heritages have been tested and trialled to achieve the perfect lash result, which ensures the brand can appeal to all women – and that’s just mascara! It’s this kind of constant innovation that has enabled Maybelline to evolve and withstand the test of time.

How do you plan to celebrate Maybelline’s 100th birthday?

Celebrating the brands 100th birthday was a huge deal for us. Ten of the brands top global makeup directors were flown to NYC to create a makeup look reminiscent of each decade since Maybelline NY launched in 1915. It was a big event to launch celebrations which locally we’ve created a huge online campaign as well as offering lots of retailer giveaways. Afterall, it’s about the MNY fans who have supported the brand.

Name your three favourite Maybelline products:

  1. Color Drama Lip Pencils – any shade! So easy to apply and you can build the depth and intensity
  2. Volum’ Express Clossal Pumped Up Mascara – it just works for me, every single time.
  3. Dream Wonder Foundation – the great all-rounder with a formula that has the strength of a concealer but the fluidity of milk that makes it a dream to apply!

510 Red Essential

50 Creamy Natural

And what’s been your favourite look from the decades past?

I love the 40’s where women were tough yet glamorous. Lips were rouge, lashes were long and full and skin was flawless. The classic beauty look! It was also a decade where women were encouraged to join the workforce so they were experimenting with their looks and showcased an air of confidence!
