Spicy Wonton, Veggie and Noodle Bowl

Ever get food cravings that you just can’t kick? I combined two of my cravings and created something delicious, a Spicy Wonton, Veggie and Noodle Bowl.

This recipe came about a few nights ago, when I was craving Din Tai Fung’s Spicy Wonton Soup and vegetables.┬áIt has been a month and a half since my last Din Tai Fung fix and I just couldn’t kick the craving, so I scoured the net and found a chili sauce recipe that claimed to taste pretty similar – Angel Wong’s Spicy Wontons in Chili Sauce.

I headed to the store and found all the ingredients for the sauce, some frozen dumplings (because I could not be bothered making them from scratch) and soba noodles. I had broccoli, green beans and snow peas in the fridge, so I prepared to stir fry them and throw them in the bowl with the noodles and the dumplings.

There are a few steps to this meal so I suggest making the sauce first and setting it aside while you soak the noodles, cook the dumplings and stir fry the veggies.

Warning: This is spicy and not for the faint-hearted. If you are looking for a little spice but more sauce, mix a tablespoon of the spicy mixture in with a few tablespoons of chicken broth.

For the sauce

4 Tbs soy sauce

3 tsp white sugar (preferably cane)

2 cloves garlic, minced

3 tsp Chinkiang Vinegar (Chinese Black Vinegar)

1-2 Tbs Chili Garlic Sauce (or to taste)

1-2 tsp Chili Oil or alternatively a Chili and Sesame Oil

For the rest

1 bunch of Soba noodles

10-14 frozen dumplings

1 Tbs Vegetable oil

1 small bunch of trimmed green vegetables, such as green beans, snow peas, broccolini or asparagus


Roasted black sesame seeds

Scallions, for garnishing (optional)


For the sauce

  1. Add the soy sauce, sugar and garlic to a frypan over low heat and stir until sugar has dissolved and ingredients are combined. Pour into a small mixing bowl.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients and mix until well combined. Set aside.

For the rest

  1. Cook up the noodles and wontons, as instructed on the packets.
  2. Add the vegetable oil and the vegetables to the cleaned frypan and cook over medium-high heat, until cooked.
  3. Add the noodles to a bowl, followed by the wontons and then the vegetables.
  4. Drizzle over the sauce and garnish with peanuts, sesame seeds and green onions. Enjoy!
