Bannisters by the Sea Mollymook

I know how I’ll be spending my birthday every year, I’ll be spending a romantic and delicious weekend away at Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook

I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to write about Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook. It certainly isn’t because it’s not worth writing about, in fact it’s the opposite! This place is fantastic and I’m worried I’m not going to be doing it justice.

Bannister’s is a 34–room property right on Mollymook beach. Founded by the brilliant Rick Stein and his wife Sarah, the luxury boutique hotel is the perfect location for a romantic weekend away. As well as a hotel, Bannister’s has a incredible seafood restaurant and a spa, complete with steam room, rain shower and extensive list of treatments.

I’m a huge fan of Rick Stein and his recipes and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my birthday than at a beautiful hotel with my man, enjoying incredible views and food.

We arrived to Bannister’s in the early afternoon, after a leisurely drive down from Sydney and a mandatory stop at Berry’s Donut Van. We were hungry but didn’t want to ruin our appetite for dinner, so we ordered a cheese platter, cracked open a bottle of champagne and took in the spectacular views that were now ours for 48 hours.

We stayed in one of the four Luxury Suites. This room was spacious both inside and out, with a large wrap-around deck with full ocean views. Inside there is a separate living and bedroom area and a large bathroom which homes a big spa bath.

The restaurant is spacious and beautiful decorated, with Mediterranian tiles in the entrance, a roaring fire and that beautiful ocean view.

We were there for a seafood feast, so we started off sharing half a dozen oysters which were incredibly fresh and tasty. Then we shared the Warm Shellfish with Parsley, Chilli, Olive Oil, Garlic and Lemon Juice (AU$39 for one person, AU$68 for two). Another beautiful styled dish, filled with prawns, scallops, oysters, mussels, clams and balmain bugs. The sauce is tasty but doesn’t overpower the natural flavours of the shellfish.

For SD’s main he went with the lobster. You order the lobster by the gram and a price is agreed before confirming.

I had heard a lot about the Bannister’s Fish Pie (AU$44) and just couldn’t go past it. The pie was filled with salmon, snapper, blue eye, scallops, mushrooms and prawns in a creamy fish velouté sauce with black truffles. The pie was then topped with breadcrumbs and parmesan. Oh goodness, I’m drooling just thinking about it.

Our meals came out fairly quickly and were as delicious as we had expected. SD’s lobster was quite the sight on a plate, it was huge and generously covered in garlic and herb butter. My fish pie was equally as big, though I still managed to finish it off and find room for dessert.

I can’t recommend the fish pie enough, it was so good that I ordered again the next day and bought Rick’s cookbook, just so I could have the recipe. A few days later my Auntie and I made the pie for my Mum’s Birthday. Three times in one week and I still couldn’t get enough.

Full and satisfied, we wondered around the property for a few minutes, before turning in for the night.

After a lazy morning, we made our way back down to the restaurant for breakfast. The corner of the restaurant had been set up as a little buffet, filled with pastries, hot plates and fruit. Coffee and eggs were ordered, croissants and bacon filled our plates and we just there enjoying the winter sun and reading newspapers.

Afterwards, we walked around the picturesque property.

On the edge of the property is a set of stairs which leads down to a little rocky-beached bay.

I think I took well over fifty photos of this little bay, it was so picturesque. If it wasn’t the middle of winter then I definitely would have gone for a swim.

We ended up sitting on a rock by the water for hours, just chatting and taking in our incredible surrounds. It was then back to the hotel to laze by the pool… in jeans, jumpers and scarfs.

For lunch we decided to eat at the pool bar so we found ourselves the best spot in the house, overlooking the pool and the ocean. We shared a Garlic Prawn Pizza (AU$27) and Honey Baked Brie (AU$15 ) with crusty bread. If I didn’t know how good dinner was going to be, then I probably would have stayed there and ordered more of the menu.

We needed to make room for dinner, so we walked around the property again and found ourselves a spot to watch the incredible sunset.

It was a cold night, so we decided to spend the night in our room with a few movies and room service.

There’s no average room service menu here! The menu is the same as the restaurant, so it was lobster and fish pie for us! By far, the best room service I have ever enjoyed.

We woke to watch the sunrise on the Sunday and wished we could move into Bannisters. This place is dreamy and we swore to come back and visit every year for my birthday. July can’t come soon enough! Next time we’ll go for longer and a visit to the spa will be a must.

If you’re looking for a romantic luxury getaway with amazing food, then Bannister’s is the place for you. I cannot recommend this place enough. In fact, I even bought my Mum and Dad a gift voucher for the hotel.
