Ironside Fish and Oyster, San Diego

Oysters, Chowder Fries and Lobster Rolls, just a few of the delicious dishes available at Ironside Fish and Oyster, San Diego.

One of my favourite restaurants in San Diego is the Ironside Fish and Oyster, on India Street in Little Italy. A trip to San Diego wouldn’t be complete without a lunch at Ironside.

The spacious restaurant is located in a converted warehouse and the interior is, naturally, nautically themed and very well done. An oyster bar and traditional bar run along one side of the venue, complete with an old-school diver’s mask and octopus bottle holders. The opposite side has a piranha skull feature wall, paintings of the ocean and a cute little nook filled with vintage suitcases.

While I love the interior, I love the food and drink more!

Looking for a drink that will cure any hangover? Ironside’s Bloody Mary wows, both in sight and taste. I’ve attempted to finish twice and can’t, but it won’t stop me from ordering again.

SD and I love oysters and always share half a dozen as our starter. You can order 12 for US$30, 6 for US$16 or individually at US$3 each. Oysters include Mirada, Ironside Select and Wildcat from Washington, Phantom Creek and Fanny Bay from British Columbia, Delaware from New Jersey.

A visit to Ironside always turns into a huge feast because the food is THAT good. Their Clam Chowder (US$10) with pork, potato and cheddar biscuits, is some of the best I’ve had. It tastes even better when served on a plate of fries (US$15) – this is a must order!

Another must have is the famous Lobster Roll (US$22). Oh, my mouth is watering just thinking about the warm brioche bread, slathered in brown butter mayo and filled with fresh lobster. This is to die for.

Whole Maine lobster is available at US$1.60 and ounce. You can have it served grilled or plancha, which is griddled. Of course you can enjoy as is or topped with a splash of garlic butter.
